Red Wine Beef Broccoli with Mushrooms
In less than 30 minutes, you can make a delicious beef broccoli dish at home without going out whenever you crave Chinese food!
I have got plenty of practice in cooking and tweaking American Chinese food at home. Today, I want to share a special version of Beef Broccoli with ya! It’s classic, easy and delicious!
Why This Recipe is Special
Adding mushrooms brings a rich and earthy flavor that complements the beef perfectly. White or crimini mushrooms cook quickly and soak up flavors beautifully. They’re also nutritional powerhouses packed with vitamins and minerals.
The marinade uses readily available red wine instead of hard-to-find sherry. Red wine adds a deep, robust flavor, and by marinating beef in it, we achieve a seriously delightful tenderness.
Worcestershire sauce, paired with oyster sauce and brown sugar in the cooking sauce, amplifies the savory notes, making every bite of beef taste like it’s been lovingly prepared in a high-end kitchen. The flavors are much more complex and satisfying than plain soy sauce blends.
Serve this up with rice to soak up that incredible, sauce-drenched goodness. With the broccoli adding its crunch and nutrients alongside our flavorful mushrooms and tender beef, this dish is balanced, nutritious, and simply delicious.
Key Ingredients and Their Roles
- Beef Sirloin: Thinly slicing allows it to cook quickly and evenly, ensuring tenderness. Marinating in red wine and cornstarch helps to tenderize the meat.
- Broccoli adds a fresh crunch and contrasting texture. It is packed with vitamins, fiber, and antioxidants. Its mild flavor pairs well with bold sauces.
- White or Crimini Mushrooms absorb flavors and add earthy richness. They cook quickly, making them perfect for a stir-fry. They are also nutrient-dense, adding a wholesome element.
- Red Wine Imparts a rich, robust flavor to the beef. It also acts as a tenderizer, helping to break down the fibers for a softer texture.
- Soy Sauce is the foundational ingredient in both marinade and cooking sauce. It provides the umami and saltiness characteristics of Asian dishes.
- Worcestershire Sauce elevates beef’s flavor with tangy, savory notes. Combining with other ingredients creates a complex and satisfying taste profile.
- Cornstarch is key to marinades and cooking sauces. In marinades, it helps create a velvety texture on the beef, and in sauces, it acts as a thickening agent.
- Brown Sugar adds a perfect touch of sweetness to balance out the saltiness of soy and Worcestershire sauces. It helps caramelize the sauce, giving it a luscious consistency.
- Oyster Sauce is a thick, flavorful sauce that deepens umami notes. It is richer than soy sauce and adds a unique layer of flavor.
- Chicken Broth prevents the dish from becoming too salty and adds depth of flavor. It is the liquid that helps all sauce components come together cohesively.
- Garlic and Ginger are essential aromatics that provide a fresh, sharp undertone and complexity to the overall flavor profile. They enhance savory elements while balancing the richness of sauces.
Preparation and Marinating
Slice the beef sirloin into thin strips. This is crucial because thin slices cook quickly and evenly, ensuring your beef remains tender.
In a medium bowl, combine the marinade ingredients:
- 1 tablespoon of red wine
- 1 tablespoon of soy sauce
- 1 tablespoon of cornstarch
- 2 teaspoons of sesame oil
- 1/2 teaspoon of ground black pepper
Mix thoroughly until the cornstarch is completely dissolved.
Add the prepared beef slices to the marinade. Coat each piece of beef thoroughly. The cornstarch helps tenderize the meat and ensures that every bite is flavorful. Once the beef is well-coated, let it rest. This gives the flavors a chance to imbue the meat, ensuring a delicious result.
Take your time with this step to ensure the best possible outcome for your Red Wine Beef Broccoli with Mushrooms.
Final Adjustments and Serving Suggestions
Once you’ve combined all the ingredients in the pan, continue to stir the mixture for about 30 seconds. This allows the sauce to thicken properly, ensuring it clings beautifully to the beef, broccoli, and mushrooms. You’ll notice the transformation as the sauce envelops everything in a lush, glossy coating.
This dish pairs excellently with a bed of steaming white rice for serving. The rice will soak up any extra sauce, making every bite flavorful. Spoon the beef, broccoli, and mushroom mixture generously over the rice.
Finish by garnishing the dish with chopped green onions and toasted sesame seeds. The green onions add a pleasant sharpness and freshness, while the sesame seeds provide a subtle nuttiness and texture.
Since we’ve incorporated red wine into both the marinating and cooking process, why not enjoy a glass alongside your meal? It enhances the overall dining experience, bringing out the deeper flavors of the dish.
Your special Red Wine Beef Broccoli with Mushrooms is ready to be devoured. It’s classic, comforting, and elevated to new heights with carefully selected flavors. Cheers to delicious homemade meals that bring joy to the table!

Food really tastes best with red wine. This was the best broccoli and meat I’ve ever done.
I prefer not to cook with alcohol. What would be a good substitute for the red wine in this dish?
Hi Ismat, in your case, you may simply omit the wine from this recipe. Hope you enjoy it. Happy cooking!
